EU Sanctions HTX Amid Growing International Focus on Cryptocurrency-Evasion
The European Union has taken a significant step in its efforts to combat Russian sanctions evasion by targeting cryptocurrency exchange HTX. The EU has added HTX, formerly known as Huobi, to its list of sanctioned entities for allegedly helping Russians bypass financial restrictions.
HTX was founded in China and acquired by Hong Kong billionaire Justin Sun in 2022. This move marks a broader effort by the EU to crack down on cryptocurrency's role in sanction evasion, particularly with regards to Russia's actions in Ukraine.
The sanctions do not involve an asset freeze, leaving HTX's operations unscathed for now. The move underscores growing international attention towards the use of cryptocurrencies in evading financial restrictions.
