EU Sanctions Package Expands Crypto Operators' Regulatory Burden
On August 25th, 2026, a new provision in the EU's sanctions package against Russia came into effect, significantly expanding the perimeter of rules that European crypto operators must adhere to.
This development is significant because it shows how compliance in the European crypto world is becoming increasingly complex and multi-layered.
It's no longer enough for operators to be authorized under MiCA (the EU's cryptocurrency regulation) and follow industry-specific rules. A new level of scrutiny has been introduced, one that deals with international financial sanctions, which operate according to a completely different logic.
