EU Slaps Tough New Rules on ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox
The European Commission has placed ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox under direct supervision due to their significant impact on EU citizens. The three platforms must assess and mitigate risks within four months of notification, with non-compliance resulting in fines up to 6% of global annual turnover.
ChatGPT search recorded an average of 159.1 million monthly active users in the European Union, while Reddit reported 57.2 million and Roblox 46.6 million. The Commission classified ChatGPT as a Very Large Online Search Engine (VLOSE), while Reddit and Roblox were labeled as Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs).
The designation is part of the Digital Services Act's enhanced supervision regime, which aims to ensure that large online platforms prioritize user safety and well-being.
