EU Targets ChatGPT, Reddit, Roblox with Enhanced DSA Scrutiny
The European Commission has designated ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox as Very Large Online Search Engines (VLOSE) and Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) under the Digital Services Act's (DSA) enhanced supervision regime.
The three platforms meet the threshold of at least 45 million average monthly users in the EU, with ChatGPT having 159.1 million users, followed by Reddit with 57.2 million, and Roblox with 46.6 million.
As part of this designation, the Commission has instructed these platforms to assess risks tied to their services and algorithmic systems and introduce measures to reduce them by January 2027.
The European Commission's executive vice-president for Tech Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen, stated that 'these new designations mean that ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox will now be held to a higher standard of scrutiny and accountability in the European Union.'
