EU Unveils Ambitious Sanctions Package Against Russia Amid Mounting Economic Pressures
The European Union has adopted its 21st package of sanctions against Russia, targeting key sectors and individuals in an effort to curb Moscow's aggression in Ukraine.
The new measures ban transactions with and disconnect 33 additional Russian banks from the SWIFT financial messaging system, including major regional lenders. This brings the total number of affected banks to 94, covering approximately 50% of Russia's banking sector.
The EU has also targeted cryptocurrency platforms in third countries, sanctioning 14 platforms linked to the A7 network and introducing a mechanism allowing it to prohibit cooperation with these operators. The package further restricts Russian access to dual-use goods, including nickel powders, metals, and alloys used in corrosion-resistant coatings for jet engines.
The EU has agreed to introduce restrictions on former Russian military personnel entering the European Union, while continuing work on practical aspects of implementation. The new sanctions package also includes measures aimed at protecting EU operators from Russian court rulings and providing legal support in case of enforcement attempts by third countries' courts.
