EU Zcash Ban: What It Means for Regulated Exchanges and Individual Owners
Buying Zcash (ZEC) is still possible in the EU despite an upcoming ban. The European Union's Regulation (EU) 2024/1624, also known as the AMLR or anti-money-laundering regulation, prohibits regulated companies from keeping accounts that allow for anonymity or obfuscation of transactions.
The prohibition is set to take effect on July 10, 2027, but it only applies to credit institutions, financial institutions, and crypto-asset service providers. Private individuals are not affected by this ban, and their ownership of ZEC remains untouched.
In fact, the regulation explicitly states that it does not prohibit owning anonymity-enhancing coins like Zcash (ZEC). However, regulated exchanges may choose to delist ZEC from their trading pairs once the ban takes effect, which could impact market availability.
