Ex-FBI Supervisor Accused of Stealing $1 Million in Cryptocurrency Using Privileged Access

A former FBI supervisor, Patrick Yaroch, is at the center of a cryptocurrency theft case that has put wallet-key controls in focus.

The alleged theft involved around $1 million in cryptocurrency and was carried out by Yaroch, who allegedly used his privileged access to search FBI systems and memorize wallet passphrases. He made about 10 transfers using this information, with his personal wallet reaching roughly $1 million, according to investigators.

The balance trail shows that Suilend held 83.2% of the two preliminary balances, while Kraken held 16.8%. The FBI agents transferred around $925,000 into government crypto wallets, leaving only a small amount at Kraken due to its presence in dollars.

The case does not seem to have had any significant impact on the cryptocurrency markets, with Bitcoin and other listed proxies finishing steady or higher. However, it may still lead to a review of government cryptocurrency custody controls and potentially tighten access to wallets using passphrases from internal systems.
