Exchanges Charge Exorbitant Crypto Withdrawal Fees
A recent analysis by cryptoticker.io found that crypto withdrawal fees charged by exchanges are often significantly higher than the actual network fee. On August 17, 2026, for example, Bitvavo charged a fixed withdrawal fee of 0.000023 BTC (€1.25) for Bitcoin withdrawals, while the actual network fee ranged between €0.08 and €0.15.
This discrepancy is particularly striking when considering that some exchanges charge a factor of eight to sixteen times more than the network fee. In fact, across all 429 assets analyzed, the median withdrawal fee was €0.84, with 158 assets falling within the range of 90 cents to one euro.
The analysis also found that for 26 assets, the withdrawal fee reaches or exceeds the minimum amount, effectively leaving nothing on paper. Additionally, the study revealed a clustering effect, where fees tend to cluster around €0.95, particularly for Ethereum-based tokens. This suggests that withdrawal fees are often set as a euro amount and then converted into the relevant coin unit.
