Exchanges Struggle with Post-Quantum Signature Migration
Cryptocurrency exchanges are facing a pressing challenge as they prepare for Bitcoin's potential transition to post-quantum signature schemes. A recent workshop hosted by Coinbase, in collaboration with Stanford and Localhost Research, highlighted the complexity of this migration process.
The main issue is that current quantum computers cannot yet break Bitcoin's signatures, but a sufficiently capable future machine could target coins whose public keys are already visible on-chain. Glassnode estimated that 1.6 million BTC, or about 40% of its operationally exposed total, were held in exchange-related balances.
Exchanges have tools at their disposal to reduce operational exposure, such as address hygiene, change-output rotation, and reserve management. However, the transition process is not a simple one, with various trade-offs involving transaction size, hardware performance, key management, and adoption.
