Exchanges vs Self-Custody: CZ's Data-Driven Argument Sparks Industry Debate
Crypto exchange Binance's founder Changpeng Zhao has sparked debate in the industry by arguing that storing cryptocurrency on an exchange is safer than self-custody. According to data from analyst Willy Woo, approximately 1.57 million BTC have been lost through self-custody compared to roughly 1.51 million BTC lost on exchanges.
The data shows that individual mistakes in self-custody have quietly surpassed the total damage from every exchange breach in Bitcoin's history. However, some analysts have suggested that a significant portion of those self-custody losses include dormant early-era holdings, potentially including coins linked to Satoshi Nakamoto's estimated stash.
CZ pointed to Binance's Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) as evidence that exchanges have evolved past the Wild West era of Mt. Gox. The fund currently holds approximately $1 billion in reserves and has already been used to cover losses from a 2019 hack.
