Fake Crypto Apps Fuel Hong Kong's Romance Scam Epidemic

Share

Hong Kong police have flagged a $3 million romance scam involving a fake cryptocurrency application. The victim, an insurance agent in her industry, lost approximately $3.3 million after being convinced to invest through what appeared to be a legitimate digital asset investment platform.

The scammer posed as a romantic interest and built emotional rapport with the victim over weeks or months before introducing the idea of investing together. The fake app displayed fabricated profits designed to encourage larger deposits, but by the time the victim tried to withdraw funds, the money was gone, and the app disappeared entirely.

This case is one of 25 romance-linked investment fraud incidents reported by Hong Kong police in just one week, with collective losses approaching HK$70 million ($9 million). The term 'pig butchering' has been coined to describe these scams, where victims are fattened up through fake relationships before being slaughtered when they try to cash out.
