Fake Crypto Exchange Network Dismantled as Cyberattacks Surge Globally
Ukraine's cyber police dismantled a fake crypto exchange network called Money 24/7, seizing over 20 million hryvnias in cash and detaining its organizer. The scammers operated under the guise of a legitimate service for exchanging fiat currencies and crypto assets, using polished websites, Telegram channels, and a presentable office to disarm suspicion.
The scheme worked by clients submitting online orders to buy cryptocurrency, then being invited to the office to hand over cash, which was taken but never reached their wallets. To delay police reports, scammers stalled victims with small portions of the agreed crypto amount and 'written guarantees' that the transaction would be completed soon.
The FBI warned of a surge in cyberattacks aimed at stealing intimate photos and videos from social media and cloud accounts, with hackers threatening to send compromising content to family and friends or publish it publicly unless a ransom was paid. Even when victims paid, criminals often sold the stolen content on the dark web along with personal data.
A Delta Air Lines flight was also hit by a cyberattack during its journey from Las Vegas to Atlanta, involving passengers who had attended the DEF CON 34 hacking conference. The hackers forced disconnections and spun up their own network, then phished and stole personal data from unsuspecting passengers.
