FanDuel Under Investigation for Proxy Betting After Bill Simmons' Confession

Massachusetts regulators have opened an investigation into FanDuel after sports media personality Bill Simmons revealed on his podcast that he used a proxy to place NFL wagers. Simmons, who is based in California where sports betting is not permitted, admitted to using his daughter's boyfriend to log into his FanDuel account and place bets for him.

According to Simmons, the arrangement worked as follows: he shared his password with his daughter's boyfriend, known only as Hank, then forwarded the two-factor authentication code sent to his phone. Hank then placed the bets using funds that Simmons had accumulated from previous winning wagers.

FanDuel has since voided the bets and reported the matter to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC). The MGC has confirmed that they are aware of Simmons's on-air comments and are reviewing the situation.

The use of a proxy to place bets is banned in Massachusetts, and FanDuel's terms and conditions also prohibit the practice. A previous case in New Jersey serves as a benchmark for fines: DraftKings was fined $150,000 in 2022 for negligently allowing proxy wagering.
