Farage Faces New By-Election Threat Over £5m Crypto Gift
Nigel Farage's re-election in Clacton has reignited an investigation into a £5m gift from crypto-billionaire Christopher Harborne, which could result in the Reform UK leader facing another by-election.
The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, Daniel Greenberg, had paused the investigation after Farage resigned from Parliament to trigger the original by-election, but it can now continue with renewed urgency.
Farage received the £5m gift in early 2024, ahead of the general election, which he claimed was for his personal security. However, the rules require MPs to declare any 'personal benefit' linked to their political activities within a month of taking office.
The House of Commons Code of Conduct states that 'purely personal gifts or benefits' from family or commercial loans are exempt from registration, but it also emphasizes that both the giver's motive and the use of the gift should be considered, and if there is any doubt, the benefit should be registered.
