Farage's Secret Crypto Backer Exposed as UK Parliament Scandal Deepens
Nigel Farage's finances are under increasing scrutiny after an investigation revealed he accepted undeclared support from convicted fraudster George Cottrell before his 2024 election. The support reportedly covered security, social media staff, and a rented townhouse near Buckingham Palace.
Cottrell, who served eight months in a US prison in 2017 for wire fraud, bankrolled parts of Farage's political operation, including recruiting and paying three staff to overhaul his social media presence.
Farage registered only one Cottrell benefit, a £9,253 trip to Belgium in April 2024, and disclosed nothing of the wider operational support. This has raised serious questions over Farage's duties as an MP, with Liberal Democrat MP Josh Babarinde referring the case to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards.
The claims have added to months of mounting scrutiny over Farage's finances, including an investigation into an undeclared £5 million gift from crypto tycoon Christopher Harborne. Reform UK, led by Farage, is currently leading most national opinion polls and could face a recall petition if he is suspended for 10 days or more.
