FATF Reports Widespread Crypto Travel Rule Adoption, But Enforcement Lags Behind

Share

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) reported that 83% of jurisdictions have implemented crypto travel rules, but only about 40% of those countries with enacted laws have taken focused supervisory or enforcement measures. The FATF's annual survey found that the number of jurisdictions reporting Travel Rule legislation increased from 65 in 2024 to 91 in 2026.

The gap between legislation and action is significant, with 55 jurisdictions having enacted laws but no reported action. This patchwork of rules has created an uneven playing field for Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs), who must navigate different regulatory requirements across countries.

Vendors providing Travel Rule tools are not a one-stop solution, as firms still need to test coverage, directory freshness, and message interoperability. The UK's implementation of the Travel Rule is illustrative, with regulators telling firms to take a risk-based decision when information is incomplete.
