FATF Sounds Alarm on Global Oversight Gap Amid AI Crypto Crime Surge
The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has published its seventh compliance report on virtual assets, warning of an operational gap in global oversight amid the rise of AI crypto crimes and the use of tokens designed to evade asset freezes.
The report reveals significant progress in developing formal legal frameworks, with 86% of 147 analyzed jurisdictions concluding their risk assessments for the sector. Likewise, 83% enacted specific regulations to implement the Travel Rule.
However, a lack of direct oversight is starkly evident: Chainalysis data indicates that 60% of countries with active Travel Rule laws have conducted no inspections or issued penalties against non-compliant entities.
