FBI Agent Accused of Stealing $1 Million in Cryptocurrency
An FBI agent working in Washington, D.C. has been accused of taking around $1 million in cryptocurrency from digital accounts tied to a suspect in an overseas criminal investigation.
The supervisory agent, Patrick Yaroch, reportedly told a Department of Justice employee that the situation was 'eating him up inside' and wanted to get it 'off his chest.'
According to court documents obtained by the Wall Street Journal, Yaroch allegedly made 10-12 withdrawals using passcodes for the suspect's accounts, which were gathered from information obtained during the FBI investigation.
The agent has not been charged with stealing the cryptocurrency, but the documents list the charge as interstate transfer of stolen goods. His home was searched and he was arrested over the weekend.
