FBI Agent Accused of Stealing $1 Million in Cryptocurrency
An FBI supervisory agent in Washington, D.C. has been accused of stealing around $1 million in cryptocurrency from digital accounts tied to a suspect in an overseas investigation.
The agent, Patrick Yaroch, reportedly confessed to the alleged crime last week and told a Department of Justice employee that it was 'eating him up inside'.
According to court documents obtained by the Wall Street Journal, Yaroch allegedly made 10-12 withdrawals using passcodes for the suspect's accounts, which were gathered during the FBI investigation.
The agent may have taken the money due to frustrations that the FBI 'could not or would not act against adversarial cryptocurrency accounts,' the outlet reports.
The FBI has confirmed that Yaroch has been fired and arrested over the weekend, with his home searched as part of the investigation.
