FBI Agent Accused of Stealing $1M in Cryptocurrency Over Frustration
FBI Counterintelligence Agent Accused of Stealing Nearly $1M in Cryptocurrency
A federal complaint alleges that Patrick Yaroch, a 37-year-old FBI counterintelligence agent, stole nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency after becoming frustrated with the agency's inability to act against adversarial accounts. According to the complaint, Yaroch had been exposed to these accounts during his investigative work and began transferring funds from them to his personal wallet.
Yaroch reportedly told investigators that he was 'spinning out of control' and decided to 'take matters into his own hands.' He allegedly transferred funds 10-12 times in late 2024 or early 2025. The FBI discovered a conversation between Yaroch and the AI chatbot ChatGPT, where Yaroch asked for advice on how to leave the US with $1 million.
The case has sparked concerns about the security of sensitive information within law enforcement agencies.
