FBI Agent Arrested for Allegedly Stealing $1 Million in Cryptocurrency, Using ChatGPT for Personal Gain

A former FBI supervisory agent has been arrested and charged with allegedly stealing around $1 million in cryptocurrency, which he then attempted to use for personal gain. According to investigators, Patrick Yaroch mixed the stolen funds with his own money and used AI chatbot ChatGPT to explore investment opportunities and relocation options.

Yaroch allegedly made a dozen or more crypto transfers beginning in late 2024 or early 2025, using private keys that gave him access to digital wallets. He reportedly told investigators that he was frustrated with his inability to stop individuals connected to an 'adversarial nation' from using cryptocurrency, but prosecutors allege that he transferred the assets for his own benefit.

The case has raised questions about access controls and the handling of wallet credentials in the cryptocurrency industry. Yaroch's position as a supervisory special agent in the FBI's Counterintelligence and Espionage Division may have provided him with unique access to sensitive information and assets.
