FBI Agent Arrested for Stealing Nearly $1 Million in Cryptocurrency

Share

A US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent has been accused of stealing nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency from accounts the agency was monitoring, according to court records.

The agent, Patrick Steven Yaroch, allegedly became frustrated by what he saw as government inaction over the misuse of crypto accounts and used his internal access to transfer the funds to his personal account. The FBI fired Yaroch and arrested him last week on charges related to the interstate transport of stolen goods and receipt of stolen goods.

The case highlights the complexities of cryptocurrency investigations, where agencies must balance seizing assets with using them as intelligence gathering tools. In this instance, Yaroch allegedly asked AI chatbot ChatGPT for advice on how to leave the US and become a citizen of an EU country, suggesting he was planning to use the stolen funds.

The FBI has stated that they take such conduct seriously and are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
