FBI Agent Charged with Stealing $1 Million in Crypto Amid Corruption Allegations
A US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) counterintelligence agent has been charged with allegedly stealing around $1 million worth of cryptocurrency from an overseas criminal target. Patrick Yaroch, a member of the FBI, is accused of using a passphrase obtained during an investigation to make unauthorized withdrawals from the account and transfer the funds to his own crypto wallet.
According to reports, Yaroch made 10 to 12 unauthorized withdrawals from the account, eventually mixing the stolen money into his personal assets. The FBI allegedly searched Yaroch's home and arrested him over the weekend after discovering his actions.
In an apparent attempt to justify his actions, Yaroch reportedly told colleagues that he was 'frustrated' with the FBI's inability or unwillingness to act against certain cryptocurrency accounts. However, investigators claim to have found evidence contradicting this narrative, including Yaroch's search history and a conversation with AI chatbot ChatGPT where he discussed investing $1 million to fund his retirement.
