FBI Agent Steals $1 Million in Cryptocurrency Amid Government Inaction
An FBI agent has been accused of stealing nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency from accounts monitored by the agency. Patrick Steven Yaroch, a member of the FBI's national security investigative squad, allegedly transferred the funds to his personal account after becoming frustrated with what he saw as government inaction over the misuse of crypto accounts.
According to court records, Yaroch grew increasingly frustrated when he couldn't do more to disrupt an unnamed person's use of cryptocurrency accounts. He used his internal agency access to transfer the funds, which were valued at over $900,000. The FBI has fired Yaroch and arrested him on charges related to the interstate transport of stolen goods.
Yaroch allegedly asked AI chatbot ChatGPT about how to leave the US with a large sum of money and become a resident or citizen of an EU country. ChatGPT provided advice tailored to Yaroch's age, lifestyle, and interests.
