FBI Agent's Crypto Heist Exposes Agency's Oversight Flaws
A top-secret counterintelligence supervisor at the FBI has landed in hot water after allegedly draining nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency from monitored accounts. Patrick Yaroch, a supervisory special agent with a top-secret clearance, worked on a squad focused on an adversarial nation, later identified as Russia.
The investigation revealed that Yaroch used his internal access to move the assets into a wallet he controlled over a series of transfers, totaling roughly $925,000. According to court records, the money came from accounts linked to foreign targets, but Yaroch never interacted with any of the people or entities behind those accounts.
The motive for Yaroch's actions was reportedly not pure greed, but rather frustration that the FBI could not or would not act against the adversarial crypto accounts he was tracking. He felt the agency was letting bad actors operate freely, and he was upset he could not do more to disrupt their activity during the investigation.
Yaroch confessed to his actions and voluntarily met with personnel at FBI headquarters, telling them he wanted to disclose that he had badly messed up. The evidence trail revealed a would-be escape plan pieced together with the help of artificial intelligence, including travel plans for Yaroch and his family to visit Portugal.
