FBI Cracks Steam Malware Case Using Google Cookies, Uber Eats Data
A federal investigation led to the arrest of 21-year-old Zyaire Dontaevious Zamarion Wilkins in Florida on July 14. The FBI alleges that Wilkins was involved in a Steam malware campaign that infected approximately 8,000 devices and stole at least $220,000.
The investigation used a combination of Google cookies, phone records, and over 500 Uber Eats deliveries to identify Wilkins as the alleged financier and marketer of the campaign. The FBI obtained a residential search warrant for Wilkins' North Lauderdale residence, where they seized laptops, phones, and three cryptocurrency wallet seed phrases.
One seed phrase was associated with a Monero wallet containing eight addresses. Investigators found that the wallet's transaction history showed Wilkins had sent or received approximately 1,233 XMR valued at roughly $382,000. The figure reflects cumulative transaction activity and is separate from the alleged victim-loss estimate of at least $220,000.
