FBI Dismantles Global Crypto Laundering Network

Share

The FBI and Australian Federal Police have dismantled an international cybercrime syndicate that laundered millions in cryptocurrencies. Two young men from Perth, aged 21 and 23, compromised the infrastructure of over 1,000 organizations worldwide, stealing 500,000 user credentials.

The accused, Reuben Ian Thomson and Louis Michael Gebler, inserted malware into open-source tools to gain access to corporate networks. They then sold this access on darknet forums in exchange for cryptocurrencies.

Authorities seized large amounts of crypto assets and properties acquired with those funds during the raids. An Australian court has already formally charged Thomson with operating on illicitly obtained proceeds exceeding $100,000.

The FBI's Deputy Legal Attaché warned that 'hiding behind a screen is no longer a shield from the rule of law.' The operation demonstrates security agencies' capacity to de-anonymize and seize cryptocurrencies anywhere in the world.
