FBI Supervisor Charged in $925,000 Cryptocurrency Theft Case
Patrick Yaroch, an FBI supervisor, has been charged in connection with the theft of nearly $925,426 from cryptocurrency accounts linked to Russia. The alleged scheme involved transferring funds into his personal wallet using access obtained through FBI systems.
According to federal prosecutors, Yaroch used the keys needed to move money from these wallets after accessing FBI systems. He made up to a dozen transfers totaling about $925,426.07.
The affidavit states that Yaroch was frustrated with the FBI's inability or unwillingness to act against adversarial cryptocurrency accounts and expressed his desire to disrupt their use during an investigation. However, he never interacted with anyone associated with these accounts, including foreign entities.
Yaroch handed over his FBI credentials and details of his cryptocurrency wallets when the FBI searched his home. He was temporarily detained on Monday and a hearing is set for Tuesday to address the charges and detention issue.
