FBI Warns of 'Massive Growth' in Central Texas Crypto Scams
The FBI is sounding the alarm on a significant rise in cryptocurrency scams in Central Texas. According to the Special Agent in Charge, there's been a 'massive growth' in local cases of cyber investment scams.
Nationwide, reported losses from these scams have totaled over $11 billion. In Central Texas specifically, fraudsters are targeting victims through dating sites and social media platforms, building trust before introducing an investment opportunity.
The victims are then directed to a website showing unrealistic gains on the investment and told to buy cryptocurrency, which is sent to a wallet owned by the scammers. The scammers will continue to exploit the victims until they're drained dry.
Cryptocurrency's anonymity makes it an attractive vehicle for fraudsters, as it's difficult to trace and can be easily laundered across international lines with minimal reporting requirements.
