FDIC Paves Way for Crypto-Focused Augustus Bank to Launch
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has approved deposit insurance for Augustus National Bank, bringing the startup closer to launching a full-service national bank focused on the digital-asset economy.
The FDIC approval is a significant step forward for Augustus, but the bank remains 'in organization' and cannot begin business until it receives final clearance from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and satisfies remaining preopening requirements.
Augustus plans to offer deposits and loans, payments and treasury services, foreign correspondent banking, digital-asset custody, and a tokenized deposit capability. It also aims to issue, custody, convert, and facilitate payments involving dollar-backed stablecoins through a wholly owned subsidiary.
The bank's model is described as an always-on, programmable dollar-clearing platform built for global financial institutions and machine-initiated transactions. Augustus already processes institutional payments in Europe and has identified cryptocurrency exchange Kraken as a customer.
