Fed Hawkishness Crashes Crypto Market, Rate Hike Odds Surge
The cryptocurrency market is experiencing a downturn, with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP prices plummeting. This comes on the heels of Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish message at the 2026 Jackson Hole Symposium, which has revived expectations of a September rate hike.
Warsh emphasized that the Fed's 2% price stability target is 'a firm, fixed target,' and that delivering stable prices is the Fed's job, 'no excuses.' He noted that the U.S. economy currently looks stronger than expected, with credit and loan markets showing few signs of policy restraint.
The market reaction has been significant, with Bitcoin dropping to $77,901.87, down 3.1% in 24 hours, while Ethereum and XRP fell by similar margins. Solana, however, is bucking the trend, currently up 15.2% over 7 days.
Not all traders see further downside ahead, with Michaël van de Poppe suggesting that the market has flushed out downside liquidity and may be poised for a rebound. However, the overall sentiment remains cautious, as the Fed's hawkish tone has recast expectations of interest rate hikes in September.
