Fed Hike Cycle Likely Over, Yield Curve Twist Suggests

The US Treasury yield curve has twisted in a way that signals the Federal Reserve may have finished raising interest rates. Following the Fed's decision on July 29 to hold its benchmark rate steady at 3.5%-3.75% for the fifth consecutive meeting, the curve shifted so that long-term yields rose while short-term yields remained relatively stable.

The twist in the yield curve indicates that investors believe the current rate is the peak and are positioning themselves accordingly. This shift reflects expectations of sustained economic growth and persistent inflation rather than fears of additional rate hikes.

The Fed's decision was not unanimous, with three FOMC members - Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari, and Lorie Logan - dissenting from the hold and pushing for a 25-basis-point increase. However, the majority held firm, and the market took this as confirmation that the hiking cycle is effectively over.

The yield curve has been alternating between steepening and flattening since 2025, reflecting the tension between sticky inflation and resilient economic growth. The consistency of the signal from five consecutive holds and a rapid reduction in September rate-increase odds all point to a market that expects no more hikes.
