Fed Holds Rates Steady Amid Sharp Divisions, Bitcoin Rises
The Federal Reserve held its interest rates steady at its July meeting, but the decision was met with sharp divisions within the committee. Three regional presidents - Beth Hammack of the Cleveland Fed, Neel Kashkari of the Minneapolis Fed, and Lorie Logan of the Dallas Fed - voted against keeping rates unchanged, each pushing for a quarter-point rate increase.
This dissenting vote is rare and sent a clear message that some members of the committee believe inflation is not coming down fast enough to justify patience. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh framed the dissents as healthy internal debate, but his words also signaled that the Fed is in no rush to declare victory on inflation.
Markets reacted sharply to the Fed's tone, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeting 1,153 points - its worst single-day performance since April 2025. Bitcoin, however, showed resilience and edged just 0.1% higher over the 24-hour period, essentially flat but directionally opposite of the stock market.
