Fed Rate Hike and CLARITY Act Vote Set to Roil Crypto Market
The crypto industry is bracing for what could be its most pivotal week of the year, with two major events scheduled to take place this week.
On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve will announce its interest rate decision, with markets assigning an 85%-90% probability of a 25-basis-point hike. This follows recent economic data showing that the US economy added 162,000 jobs last month, triple expectations, and producer inflation accelerated to 5.4%.
The combination of these numbers, along with oil prices remaining above $100 and diesel hitting a new record in the States, has strengthened the Fed's case for tighter policy. Bitcoin and altcoins have already shown their sensitivity to this shift, dropping sharply following Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's speech from Jackson Hole several weeks ago.
The question now is whether this highly expected rate hike has been priced in, with BTC sliding from $82,400 to under $78,000 as of now. Investors will closely watch Warsh's press conference after the meeting for clues on whether the Fed's decision is a one-off adjustment or the start of another tightening cycle.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Senate will hold a cloture vote on the CLARITY Act, which aims to establish a comprehensive US crypto market structure and clarify the respective roles of the SEC and CFTC. Republicans released an updated text last week, adding new rules for non-decentralized DeFi protocols and clarifying how credit unions can deal in crypto.
