Fed Rate Hike Decision Looms Large Over Bitcoin Price Action
Bitcoin's recent price action has been closely tied to inflation expectations and monetary policy uncertainty. The Federal Reserve's upcoming rate hike decision is a key factor in this uncertainty, with the CME FedWatch Tool estimating a 60.4% chance of a 25 basis point increase at next week's FOMC meeting.
According to James Butterfill, CoinShares' head of research, the market's pricing of a September rate hike 'still looks too aggressive,' particularly given softer labor data and the divergence within the Fed over inflation versus employment. Butterfill notes that the resolution of the Iran conflict or a further deterioration in confidence in US sovereign debt could drive Bitcoin higher.
The August inflation print will be a crucial date to watch, as it will determine whether Waller's disinflation case holds. If inflation expectations are confirmed, it could lead to a rate hike, but if they remain low, the Fed may keep rates unchanged.
