Fed Study Reveals Bitcoin Returns Data Drives US Households to Crypto
A recent study by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland found that providing U.S. households with information about Bitcoin's past returns significantly increased their desire to own cryptocurrency.
The study, which is still preliminary and does not represent official Fed policy, discovered that showing households data on Bitcoin's performance raised desired allocations by approximately two percentage points, a 47% increase from those not shown the data.
Crypto owners expected significantly higher returns than non-owners, with expectations dropping but the gap remaining by 2025. The study also found that actual crypto purchases rose by about 2.5 percentage points after exposure to Bitcoin performance data, particularly among non-owners who previously avoided cryptocurrency due to lack of understanding.
The researchers suggest this feedback loop of rising prices and expectations could contribute to price bubbles in the cryptocurrency market.
