Federal Officials Pursue Crypto Funds from Massachusetts Scam Victims
Massachusetts residents who fell victim to a tech-support scam have been targeted by federal officials in an attempt to recover nearly $47,000 in cryptocurrency. The U.S. Attorney's Office is seeking to keep the funds so they can be returned to the victims.
The scams began when a Ware woman's computer froze and she received a pop-up message telling her to call 'customer support'. A scammer convinced her that her bank account was compromised and instructed her to withdraw cash and deposit it into a Bitcoin Depot ATM at a Ludlow gas station.
Agents tracked the funds to a crypto wallet, where they found at least four other victims who had money funneled into the same wallet through similar scams. In March, investigators discovered this connection and are now urging anyone else hit by a tech-support or crypto scam to come forward.
