Federal Reserve Access Could be Key to Stablecoin Stability
Stablecoins are designed to bring the benefits of blockchain technology to traditional currencies while minimizing volatility. They act as bridges between fiat and cryptocurrencies, with major financial players like Mastercard investing heavily in this space.
The GENIUS Act aims to establish a regulatory framework for stablecoin reserves in the US. However, the process is ongoing, with multiple proposals still being considered by various government agencies.
A recent study analyzed the stability of stablecoins under different reserve structures and found that direct Federal Reserve access could provide an additional layer of stability. The researchers modeled four scenarios: a pre-GENIUS status quo, GENIUS-compliant arrangements using bank deposits or short Treasuries, and a hypothetical regime with reserves held directly at the Federal Reserve.
The study's findings suggest that moving from bank deposits to short-term treasuries can improve stablecoins' resilience. However, direct Federal Reserve access showed the largest modeled improvement, reducing median peak deviation by 65% under severe-stress assumptions.
