Federal Reserve Economist Praised Ripple's Payment Protocol in 2014 Video
A resurfaced 2014 video featuring David Andolfatto, then an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, highlights his early remarks on Ripple's payment protocol and its currency-agnostic design.
In the recording, Andolfatto spoke directly about the potential impact Ripple could have for its users, stating 'I think you guys might be the winners,' pointing to the network's unique structure as a protocol capable of supporting multiple currencies rather than anchoring itself to just one digital asset.
He contrasted Ripple with Bitcoin, describing the latter as a system seeking to function solely as digital money, while Ripple's protocol placed its emphasis on enabling payments across diverse financial instruments. Andolfatto listed U.S. dollars, euros, Bitcoin, and XRP, Ripple's native currency, as examples of the wide range of assets that could move across the network.
His remarks highlighted how this design allows Ripple to process various currencies, distancing itself from the idea of competing head-to-head with established national currencies. Andolfatto further noted that, in the context of regulatory developments at the time, it would be payment networks, not necessarily rival digital currencies, that could benefit from favorable rulings.
