Feds Seek to Recover $47,000 in Crypto Lost to Massachusetts Scam

Federal prosecutors in Massachusetts are working to recover nearly $47,000 in cryptocurrency that was lost to a tech-support scam targeting local residents.

A Ware woman's computer froze due to a pop-up message that convinced her to call 'customer support,' where she was told her bank account was compromised and needed to be protected by withdrawing cash and depositing it into a Bitcoin Depot ATM at a Ludlow gas station.

Agents were able to track the funds to a crypto wallet, where they found at least four other victims had money funneled in through similar scams.

The U.S. Attorney's Office is now seeking court permission to keep the cryptocurrency so it can be returned to the affected parties and urging anyone who has fallen victim to a tech-support or crypto scam to come forward.
