Fidelity Clients Buy $134M in Bitcoin as ETF Outflows Persist
Fidelity clients have been accumulating Bitcoin at an unprecedented rate, with $134 million invested over just two days in mid-August. This surge in buying activity marks a divergence between direct institutional purchases and redemptions from Fidelity's Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) and rival spot Bitcoin ETFs.
According to data from blockchain analytics firm Arkham, the buying activity is part of a broader trend where selective institutional buyers are stepping in to increase exposure despite historically low volatility levels. Bitcoin's volatility has fallen below 98.5 percent of all days in its history, creating an environment where investors are viewing weakness as a buying opportunity.
Despite outflows persisting across the market, institutional Bitcoin ETF holdings rose 7.5 percent during the second quarter of 2026, while Bitcoin itself fell 14.2 percent. This suggests that while some investors are reducing positions through ETF redemptions, others are taking advantage of the weakness to accumulate directly.
The outflows reflect broader macroeconomic pressures rather than a loss of confidence in Bitcoin, with analysis suggesting three forces driving the trend: macro uncertainty over interest rates, profit-taking from earlier rallies, and forced de-risking as positions are unwound. When interest rates remain elevated, cash and Treasury instruments become more attractive to conservative investors, reducing demand for non-yielding assets like Bitcoin.
