Fidelity Report: Quantum Resistance for Bitcoin Possible, But Community Consensus Remains Elusive
Fidelity Digital Assets has published a research report titled 'Bitcoin's Path to Quantum Resistance' that outlines the technical roadmap for making Bitcoin immune to quantum computing attacks. The report concludes that quantum-resistant upgrades through soft forks are technically feasible, but the biggest challenge lies in convincing the Bitcoin community to adopt a single approach.
The threat of quantum computers is a concern because they could potentially reverse-engineer private keys from public keys using Shor's algorithm. However, Fidelity's report emphasizes that no such machine exists yet, and the current reliance on ECDSA and Schnorr digital signature algorithms makes it computationally impractical for classical computers to derive private keys.
The solution exists, but implementing it comes with trade-offs. Post-quantum cryptographic alternatives already exist, including hash-based signature schemes and lattice-based approaches. However, these signatures are significantly larger than what Bitcoin uses today, which would result in fewer transactions per block.
