FIFA Abandons $4.2 Billion Private Equity Deal Amid UEFA Boycott Threat

FIFA's proposal to sell a chunk of its World Cup commercial rights to private equity investors has been withdrawn, just two days after it was announced. The governing body had planned to create a new subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprise, which would have managed commercial rights for the World Cup and Club World Cup, potentially packaging football's crown jewels into an investable vehicle.

The deal would have valued these rights at $20 billion and raised $4.2 billion in equity, roughly the GDP of Bermuda. However, UEFA and CONCACAF threatened to boycott FIFA events entirely if the plan went ahead, citing concerns that external investors would gain undue influence over football decisions.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino's team offered each of its 211 national federations an immediate $20 million payment for backing the plan, but it was not enough to sway UEFA and CONCACAF. The proposal was ultimately withdrawn on July 31, restoring the status quo of FIFA-controlled commercial operations.

The move has raised questions about the future of sports finance, with some arguing that tokenized governance could have distributed ownership more broadly and given fans or member associations governance rights proportional to their stake.
