FIFA's World Cup Gamble: Asset-Light Model Risks Empty Seats
FIFA's plan for the 2026 World Cup has been met with criticism over its potential to generate more revenue while also filling more seats than ever. According to BBC economics editor Faisal Islam, this goal may be unachievable due to the organization's asset-light model, which relies on using existing NFL venues rather than building new infrastructure.
The expanded 48-team tournament is projected to generate between $3 billion and $7 billion in ticket and hospitality revenue. In comparison, the 2022 Qatar World Cup brought in $929 million from these sources.
FIFA's dynamic pricing strategy allows tickets to fluctuate in price based on demand, with some starting as low as $60. However, Islam warns of a 'K-shaped' dynamic, where wealthy fans have access to luxury hospitality packages while others are priced out or stuck waiting for cheaper seats.
