Filecoin Vesting Ends: 75% Reduction in New Token Emission
On October 15, 2026, Filecoin's vesting of Protocol Labs and the Filecoin Foundation will end, marking a significant change for the FIL supply. This event will result in a roughly 75% reduction in gross emission, which refers to the volume of new FIL entering circulation each year. Currently, around 88 million FIL enter circulation annually, but this number is expected to drop to approximately 22 million after October 15.
The vesting mechanism has been the largest inflow channel for new FIL since mainnet launched in October 2020. It covers allocations to Protocol Labs and the Filecoin Foundation, which have contributed around 66.7 million FIL per year. In comparison, block rewards from storage providers contribute about 21.7 million FIL annually.
Gross emission is often confused with net supply, but they are not the same thing. Circulating supply remains unchanged on October 15 and will continue to grow slowly after that date. However, the reduction in gross emission will have a noticeable impact on the FIL market.
