Fink's Bitcoin Reversal Yields Record-Breaking ETF Success
Larry Fink's reversal on Bitcoin has been significant, from dismissing it as an 'index of money laundering' in 2017 to recognizing its potential as a scarce asset for investors. The BlackRock CEO eventually came around to Bitcoin's promise and saw its value as a 'digital gold'. His firm turned Bitcoin into one of its fastest-growing investment products.
Fink's epiphany was driven partly by Bitcoin's appeal as a 'debasement trade', allowing investors to turn to it when currencies lose purchasing power. However, the business opportunity was too enticing to ignore.
When the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) alongside 10 other spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024, it marked a significant milestone for the cryptocurrency. IBIT reached $70 billion in assets in just 341 trading days, making it BlackRock's biggest fee-generating ETF.
Despite wrapping Bitcoin in a familiar Wall Street product, investors still experienced sharp swings in value. This volatility doesn't disappear even with regulated and familiar exposure to Bitcoin's price.
