Finland has joined France's nuclear deterrence initiative, becoming the tenth European nation to participate in the defense cooperation framework. The move marks a significant shift for Finland, which had previously maintained careful neutrality between East and West.

The initiative was launched by French President Emmanuel Macron on March 2, 2026, with eight founding members: the UK, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, and Denmark. Norway joined subsequently, and Finland has now rounded out the group.

Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen framed participation as a way to strengthen Europe's overall defense posture, without creating collective defense obligations or requiring financial contributions from participating nations.
