First US Spot Bitcoin ETF Closes as Market Consolidates
Hashdex, a leading financial institution, has announced the liquidation of its Bitcoin ETF, ticker DEFI. The fund stopped trading on NYSE Arca on August 17, marking the first closure in the US spot Bitcoin ETF category since it launched in 2024.
The decision to wind down the product was made due to low assets under management, estimated at $14.7 million, and high operating costs. The liquidation process is expected to take place between August 24 and August 28, with cash distributions being made during this period.
This development may raise concerns about the health of the spot Bitcoin ETF market, but experts argue that it's a natural part of the consolidation process in an increasingly competitive category. Larger issuers have dominated flows due to their strong distribution, tight spreads, and low fees, making it challenging for smaller funds to compete.
ETF closures are not unusual in traditional markets, where weak or less differentiated products exit as stronger ones gather assets and concentrate liquidity. This process can simplify the category and benefit investors by reducing choice and increasing efficiency.
