Flowra Tries to Break Solana's Block-Building Monopoly with Open Auction
Flowra has launched an open orderflow auction on Solana, aiming to bring a competitive market for block-building to the network. This move is modeled after Ethereum's proposer-builder separation design, which increased proposer revenue by 261% after the Merge.
However, Ethereum's experience also serves as a cautionary tale. The MEV-Boost auction on Ethereum has become highly concentrated, with just a handful of firms building almost all blocks. This concentration was driven by exclusive orderflow, where large builders with access to private flow dominated the market.
Flowra is attempting to avoid this outcome by introducing an accessible stream of pending transactions and a Programmable Block Policy that allows validators to define their own transaction inclusion rules at the block-building layer. This policy will be crucial in deciding which validators Flowra wins, particularly for institutional validators who need to apply sanctions and risk controls.
The success of Flowra's open orderflow auction depends on several factors, including liquidity and exclusivity. If the auction attracts a large number of bidders, it can lead to better price discovery and more competitive market outcomes. However, if exclusive deals with private flow continue to dominate, the market may remain concentrated.
