Fogo Halt Tests Limits of Blockchain Decentralization and Economic Containment
Fogo's blockchain experienced an incident where an attacker received about 400 million FOGO tokens, which is approximately 4% of the genesis supply and more than 10% of reported circulating supply. The attack led to a mainnet liquidity problem, prompting validators to pause the chain and upgrade the network to prevent further movement of the assets.
The incident highlighted the potential trade-off between permissionless continuity and economic safety in blockchain systems. Fogo's architecture allows for a curated validator set with approval requirements, which enables swift operational alignment during crises. This approach also concentrates active consensus responsibility to reduce latency.
Fogo's protocol includes a fallback mechanism from ultra-low-latency local consensus to slower global consensus when the local mode is impaired. However, this mechanism addresses operational deterioration in the network's consensus environment, whereas the August halt was an intervention based on economic containment.
